My twin brother and I were born December 11, 1971, in Bremerton, Washington. We grew up in Silverdale, Washington, and graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1990. I joined the Army the summer after high school graduation and spent training in Kentucky and Alabama. I worked in the Californian Mojave Desert from January 1991 until April 1996 as a Helicopter Mechanic and Flight Crew Chief. In April 1996 I moved back to Washington to pursue a college education. In June 1999, I graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor in Business.
My first experience working on a racecar came in 1989 at the age of 17. Having always been a fan of NW legend Bob Fox, I jumped at an opportunity to be a part of his NASCAR Raybestos Northwest Tour team. After one season with Fox, he moved to Wisconsin to pursue his racing and I decided to join the military. Before leaving for boot camp, during my return visits to Washington and during my time in California, I also had the opportunity to work with Dirk Stephens before he moved his racing operation back east.
During my time in California, I traveled to many different tracks following the Southwest Tour and an occasional Winston West or Cup race. Near the end of my time in California, a number of racing friends and acquaintances in Washington put together a NASCAR Tour Car rental team called Race West. This team provided experience with many different drivers at many different tracks up and down the west coast. The most memorable experience with the team was having the opportunity to provide a car for Mark Martin at Portland International Raceway. Winning the race topped off the experience! After getting out of the Army and moving back to Washington to go to college, I planned on applying my business education to the real world of Race West. Unfortunately, the team was dissolved and sold off in pieces shortly after I moved back to Washington. At that time, I joined the NASCAR Tour team, Leading Edge Motorsports, owned by Bill Lawrence. For the first couple of years the team provided year round NASCAR racing. We spent spring and summer in the northwest and fall and winter down in the southwest. My brother Bryan started helping with the team in 1998.
After I graduated from college, I decided it was time to put together my own racecar. In September of 1999 I bought a partially completed stock front clip chassis. For the next year and a half my twin brother (engineer by trade and one heck of an awesome auto body man and fabricator) and I spent our weekends that were not taken up by Tour races in his garage working to transform that chassis into a racecar. Then on one cold day in March 2001, the racecar hit the track for the first time at Spanaway Speedway.
The first race came on yet another cold day -- Friday, April 13, 2001. The race was a success. I managed to keep the car out of the wall and finish the race. We continued our Friday night campaign at Evergreen Speedway, while working most Saturdays on Bill Lawrence's Tour team. Our hard work that season earned us 3rd place in the points after two feature wins and the Rookie of the Year award for the Sportsman class.
Our second season, 2002, saw some changes. We decided that we would run part time at the more centrally located Spanaway Speedway as our primary track for the season when our Saturdays were not taken up by Bill Lawrence's combined Tour schedule and Wenatchee Valley's Super Oval Late Model series. The season was long and a lot of fun both driving and crewing. All of the hard work paid off in the form of a track Championship for Bill.
Near the end of the 2003 season, after doing many different things including attempting to run a few Late Model Challenge Series races with our stock front clip Sportsman car, we decided to put together a Late Model for 2004 to compete the entire season with the Late Model Challenge Series. The rest is history...
